Durga, The Goddess

Durga, a central figure in Hindu mythology, was created to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura—a task that Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and other lesser gods were powerless to accomplish on their own. She embodies the collective energy (shakti) of these male divinities, becoming both a derivative of their power and the true source of it. Durga’s significance transcends the gods from whom she was born, as she is considered greater than any of them.

Born fully grown and radiantly beautiful, Durga assumes a fierce and menacing form when confronting her enemies. Typically depicted riding a lion, she is portrayed with 8 or 10 arms, each holding a weapon bestowed upon her by the gods to aid in her battle against Mahishasura. These weapons symbolize the divine powers she harnesses in her quest to restore cosmic order.

Durga’s victory over Mahishasura represents the triumph of good over evil, and her worship is celebrated with great fervor during Durga Puja, an annual festival that is one of the most significant in northeastern India. The festival honors her strength, courage, and protective nature, drawing millions of devotees who revere her as a powerful and benevolent goddess.
